For heavy tackle applications match the test of the monofilament that you would be using.

For light tackle applications, match the diameter, or use a PowerPro size that just slightly smaller in diameter than the mono that you are using. Since the superlines have no stretch, their shock strength is not as good as mono. You compensate for this lack of shock strength by using a stronger PowerPro line than the mono you would normally use in an application.

• Set your drag to match your tackle. We recommend that you back off on your drag setting - go as little lighter than your monofilament setting for your reel. No stretch lines can be tough on the gears in light reels. Also, since you are not losing power down the length of the line as with mono, you will not lose hook setting ability.

All pound tests are offered in 100, 150, 300, 500, and 1500 yard spools. Additionally all pound tests and spool sizes are available in three colors, Moss Green, Hi-Vis Yellow and White

Test strengths include:
10 Lb, 20, 30, 50, 65, 80. 100, 150, 200, and 250 Lb Test.

All the superlines made with fiber are translucent as opposed to transparent, so they are more visible in the water than monofilament lines.

When you are fishing for leader shy species tie on a monofilament leader. (I like the Seaguar Fluorocarbon which works very well)

80% of all PowerPro is Moss Green, 10% to 15% Hi Vis Yellow, the balance White.
During the day and in clear water, I like the green because I feel it blends in better with the surrounding structure. When fishing low light or situations where I want to see my line, I like to use Hi Vis Yellow since it lets me track the line with my eye.

I cannot give a definitive answer to the color question since we get a variety of comments from our pro staff ranging from "I tie directly to PowerPro and color doesn't matter", to "you can't catch a fish on any superline without a leader". I suspect that much depends on the specific fishing application and situation.

You may want to ask your local dealer for their recommendation.

Following are some tips to reduce the incidence of whip knots while fishing with a spinning reel:

1. Do not overfill the reel - leave at least 1/8" of rim at the top.
2. Close the bail manually after the cast is complete
3. Before you begin your retrieve, pull on the line against the drag after you've closed the bail to make sure that all the wraps are tight.

Pulling on the line only takes a second while you're waiting for the bait to fall. This will reduce 90% of the problems!

Also, if you do get a whip or wind knot, the easiest way that I've found to remove them is to put your fingers into the loop and pull. Frequently it is possible to unseat the knot, then you can just pull the line straight.

If the line on your reel starts to feel mushy:

1. Take a long cast or let the line out behind your boat
2. Retrieve with the line between your fingers to repack the spool.

Repack the line.

After throwing light baits, you may feel the line on your spool starting to get soft of “mushy”.

1. Take an extra long cast or troll the line out behind you boat.
2. Retrieve holding the line between your thumb and forefinger for extra tension.

The line should pack tightly on your reel once again.

PowerPro costs more that monofilament lines when initially purchased. Spectra Fiber is not affected by salt water, UV, or most chemicals and solvents; the life of PP is much longer than mono lines (rule of thumb - 5 times the life of Mono!). In fact, depending on how much and where you fish, PowerPro could last 2 to 3 fishing seasons or longer.

With PowerPro, you have more fish in the boat, and fewer lost baits – you’ll find that you’re actually money ahead.

No. Some of the first superlines were made of Kevlar Aramid. Aramids are very abrasive and would hurt your guides. Spectra Fiber is composed of polyethylene, a very slick plastic, in fact about the only material that is slicker than Spectra is Teflon. This fact combine with PowerPro’s enhanced Body Technology which makes a rounder and smoother line, produces a line that is gentler on rod guides than the older style braids.

Spectra has a specific gravity of 0.98 g/cc – just a hair lighter than water. Unlike heavier nylon and Dacron lines that sink, PowerPro will tend to stay at the surface. This means that you’ll get faster control of your fish after a strike – less belly in the line.

The small diameter of PowerPro lets it cut through the water much faster than traditional lines. This means that your diving baits will sink deeper, and you will be able to use less weight when bottom fishing especially in heavy currents.

The main question I get from anglers regarding Power Pro line is: Is PowerPro line IGFA legal? The answer is yes, of course. Only wire lines are prohibited. The problem with Power Pro, if anything, is that it tends to overtest into the next category. This is a moot point, though, because the only applications that come in listing Power Pro as the line used are All-Tackle records and Junior records. Line tests are not required for these particular categories. Generally, braided lines and the like overtest into the next category. If a line class record application came in where the angler used Power Pro, I would need to test it just as I would any other line class record.

No Lines are IGFA rated. Line manufacturers sometimes label lines as “IGFA class” which means that the line will break close to but not exceeding the IGFA class. For example, a single Mfg. Might make two separate 20 lb monofilament lines, their normal line which will overtest, and their 10 kg. IGFA Class (20 lb) line which is thinner and not as strong. 10 kg = 22.02 Lbs, and for a line to qualify for the 10 kg. class it must test no more than 22.02.

Absolutely! PowerPro's excellent handling characteristics makes it a good choice flyline backing in applications where you are trying to get more line capacity on your reel - this is especially important with today's large arbor reels. Soother and rounder, powerpro will pack nicely on your reel, and put less pressure on your side plates than Dacron Backing.

We see the biggest demand in Saltwater applications where anglers get into the backing more frequently than in the fresh water. PowerPro's Specific gravity at 0.98g/cc makes it tend to float, so the backing will stay on the surface unlike Dacron which will sink and causes a belly in the line. The smaller diameter also has less resistance in the water which means that you will get faster control of your fish if it runs or jumps.

The most popular sizes for backing are 50 lb (0.36mm) and 65 lb (0.41mm). This is more for the diameter than the strength - you run the risk of cutting your finger with thin and strong PowerPro - think twice before using smaller sizes in any but the lightest tackle applications. Rule of Thumb: 50 Lb will give you double the capacity of 20 lb Dacron, and 65 Lb doubles the capacity of 30 lb Dacron. You may want to choose even heavier PowerPro if you application requires it.
